angeepath 1990 review

Story of Agneepath

Mukul S Anand’s Agneepath (1990) abounds with all revenge-motive story of a heart broken character Vijay Deenanath Chauhan (Amithab Bachchan). Vijay’s father (Deenanath Chawan) is blemished for supporting prostitution in Mandwa by Dinkar Rao (Goga Kapoor) who provokes the Mandwa-villagers to stone Deenanath till the death, only to establish his and Kancha Cheena’s hegemony of illegal business. The circumstances chase Vijay along with his helpless mother (Rohini Hattangadi) and sister (Neelam) to Bombay where he is constrained to do different anomalous jobs to earn for living.

The cruel society has already taught him how to survive amid the crowd of such blood sucking vampires. He burns his inner innocent Vijay on the same burning pyre where his father’s corpse burns and gives birth to another obstinate but compassionate to the helpless, a stubborn and angry gangster- Vajay with raucous voice.

He works under Kancha Cheena’s four enemies, who supported Vijay at his early age but realize his threat in their business now and attempt to kill him. Krishnan Iyer MA (Mithun Chakraborty), a street vendor carries Vijay to hospital in the nick of time. And he survives. The plot gets developed along with the development of Krishna’s and Vijay’s friendship. Later Krishna turns to be Neelam’s( Vijay’s sister) lover. One after another Vijay kills these conspirators.

Vijay avenges for his father’s murder killing Kancha Cheena and the people responsible for it at the cost of his own downfall but makes his mother tell that her son isn’t a gangster.

How I Perceive Agneepath

Santosh Saroj has coined the plot of the movie in such a chain sequence that seems real to the circumstances, however has a bit slow pace narration at the last hour. Final part reminds somewhat war not between individuals but between nations.

Bachchan says about his characters in a Bollywood Hungama, “the characters were not very prominent in society but because of the circumstance how they fought and came up”. Indeed he sounds absolutely right in one of his characters, Vijay in Agneepath, out of many.

Dialogues primarily delivered by Amithab and Danny in a rasping and raucous voice are mind blowing. Mithun’s southern tongue for Hindi language lures the audiences’ ears to hear it again and again. Denzongpa’s antagonistic performance quite interestingly matches able to collide with the arrogant protagonist, Amithab. Motherly love for the children can be seen reflected in Rohini Hattangadi’s eyes. Mukul S Anand’s direction is flawless and the performance of almost all the characters is outstanding but Bachchan’s exceptionally good.

Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music presented here are considerably fitted to the then audiences’ demands though not for today’s. Setting functions to move the plot and characters serenely. More interestingly the movie still entertains today’s audiences.

Remake of Agneepath (1990)

The gross collection of the movie was Rs 10,25,00,000, way below the film’s budget of Rs 28,56,00,000. It was recorded as flop at the box-office although it was tenth highest-grosser of 1990. Karan Johar remade his father (Yash Johar – producer of Agneepath 1990)’s 22 years old movie with little change on same name. He wanted to prove the fact that his father was right to produce such evergreen movie. The character of Krishnan Iyer played by Mithun Chakraborty in the original was removed and Rishi Kapoor played a newly introduced negative character, Rauf Lala.

Hrithik Roshan played the lead role of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan and Sanjay Dutt played the role of the main antagonist Kancha Cheena. Priyanka Chopra was the female lead.

The film did fantastic business at the box office and entered in 100 crore club. Agneepath received five nominations at the Filmfare Awards, and won five IIFA Awards and four Zee Cine Awards.
