1. Mother India (1957)
Mother India is a family melodrama released in February 14, 1957, directed by Mehboob Khan, featuring Nargis (as Radha) in the lead role with Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Kanhaiyalal and Chaturvedi in supporting roles. This film is considered as one of the best film ever made in Indian film history which is also nominated in Oscar for the first time in Bollywood. This movie depicts the story of a poverty stricken woman who suffers from many highs and lows, troubles and tragedy, surviving it all and raises her sons through many trials and tribulations. But no matter sticks to her own moral code.
2. Umroa Jaan (1981)
Umrao Jaan is a women centric movie which was released in 1981, directed by Muzaffar ali. The movie was adapted from Urdu novel, Umrao Jaan Ada, starring Rekha and Farooq in a lead role. Her portrayal of a classical courtesan in this movie fetched her National Film Awards for best actress in 1982. This film revolves the story around a girl who sells her body and gets rich and elite because of her Shaayari (Urdu poetry).
3 Damini (1993)
Damini released in 1993, directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi is a crime drama. Meenakshi Sheshadri played the role of Damini as center character and Sunny Deol, Rishi Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Tinu Anand, Paresh Rawal in supporting role and Amir khan as a special appearance. This movie is considered to be the best women centric movie ever made in Bollywood along with Mother India .The movie depicts the story of a woman fighting against the society for justice who represents truth and innocence going against her own family.
4. Mrityudanda (1997)
It is an Indian Drama film released in 1997, directed and produced by Prakash Jha starring Madhuri Dixit, Shabana Asmi and Shilpa Shirodkar in lead character. It is an excellent off-beat movie which is neither art movie nor commercial. It is a social film celebrating social empowerment which depicts the world of cruelty, corruption and rural bureaucracy which shows a bihari story of a three village women revolting against their husbands and ultimately rushing to their doom.
5. Bawandar (2000)
Movie “Bawandar” was directed by Jag Mundhra, released in 2000, starring Deepti Naval, Nandita Das. It is based on the true story of Bhanwari Devi, a rape victim from Rajasthan India .The story revolves around a low caste potter Sanwari who gets raped by five men and wanders around Indian courts for justice where she faces, trauma, public humiliation and legal injustice.
6. The dirty picture (2011)
The dirty picture is an Indian biographical drama inspired by the real life story of Silk Smitha, a south Indian actress. It was released in 2011 and directed by Milan Luthria, starring Vidya Balan (silk) as a lead and Nassereddin Shah, Tussar Kapoor, Emran Hashmi as supporting character. This movie shows a bitter realities faced by a girl running away from her house to become an actress. It exposes how despite criticizing the amount of exposing in cinema, the masses actually enjoy the skin show and that sex sells. The story is all about rise and fall of a female actress in this male dominated society.
7. Gulaab Gang (2014)
Gulaab Gang is a social drama which was released in 2014, directed by Soumik Sen, starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla in a lead. It was inspired from the life story of Ms. Sampal lal Devi. This movie focuses on women empowerment where Rajjo (Madhuri) plays a role of protagonist, who runs a gang called gulaab gang and takes up issues like domestic violence, dowry system, rape and education and Juhi Chawla as a self centered politician and villainous character for the very first time.
8. Queen (2014)
Queen is a comedy drama film which was released in 2014, directed by Vikash Bahl, starring Kangana Ranaut (Rani) in a lead and Lisa Haydon, Rajkumar Rao on supporting characters. The film revolves around a central character Rani, innocent and sweet naïve girl from Rajouri who resolves to go to her honeymoon all alone after the rejection by her fiancée. Queen tells us the journey of Rani from Rajouri to Paris, Amsterdam and back to Rajouri again. It won the award for best hindi film and best actress by Kangana.
9. Mary Kom (2014)
Mary Kom is biographical sports drama based on the real life story of Kom, directed by Omang Kumar and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It features Priyanka Chopra as a nominative boxer and also a playback singer for a lullaby called Chaoro. She underwent extensive training for three months to attain a muscular physique and Kom’s distinct boxing styles .It was a first hindi film to be screened on the opening night in Toronto Film Festival .The movie revolves around a central character Mary Kom and her journey from small town boxer to the eponymous boxer.
10. Kahaani (2012)
Kahaani is a mystery thriller film released in 2012 which is directed by Sujoy Ghosh starring Vidya Balan as Vidya Bagchhi. The story opens up with a pregnant women searching for her husband in Kolkata. The film won 5 awards including best director and best actress at the Filmfare Awards ceremony.
