Story of Bombay Velvet

Bombay Velvet is another hindi movie based on the book ‘Mumbai Fables’ written by Gyan Prakash. This movie tells the story of newly independent and struggling India through a big people’s club named Bombay Velvet and is all about love, betrayal and greed for money

After the partition of India, a child Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor) comes to Bombay and met with Chimann (Satyadeep Misra). Balraj and his friend Chimann start working as smuggler in Bombay. Balraj falls in love with Rosie (Anushka Sharma) and to impress her he wants to become one of the richest man in Bombay. He starts to work for Kaizad Khambata (Karan Johar) as a manager of Bombay Velvet. Bombay Velvet is the name of a club where rich people of Bombay plan the future of the city.

I Have to Say

Bombay Velvet is a big budget movie and it has stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in lead roles. The famous Bollywood director Karan Johar has made debut in hindi movie as a villain. This is the movie directed by Anurag Kashyap. Due to the participation of big stars of Bollywood, Bombay Velvet has high expectation from audiences. So it has some kind of ‘pressure’ to be perfect and block buster.

In spite of all good combination, Bombay Velvet is lacking good style to tell the story. It is has almost everything to go movie block buster but still feel like something is missing which prevents us to entertain movie.

My Recommendation

Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar are impressive in Bombay Velvet. If you are fan of any of them, you surely like this movie. If you are not, just skip the movie.

My Rating

2 on 5

Bombay Velvet Around the Web

Anurag Kashayp’s journey from shoestring budget films to a mega Bollywood thriller is not as in-depth as some of his earlier films, but he has spared no effort in making it a believable premise.

– Hindustan Times

Unlike its pugilist protagonist, the film punches well below its weight.

– NDTV

Bombay Velvet is an epic misfire.
